Reflexology is a method of treating the whole being through using pressure and massage on specific areas on the feet.

The practice was originally used by Egyptians, and developed by Dr William Fitzgerald in the late 1800s. It was also known as Zone therapy. His theory was adopted by Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist and Reflexologist, who developed the FOOT MAP, upon which Reflexologists base their work today.

Eunice Ingham discovered through her work with Zone therapy that there were areas on the feet which, when stimulated by very specific massage, would have an effect on the corresponding organs/glands. The whole system is gently triggered ino action, and the subtle energy within the body is activated or calmed down.

Reflexology is a holistic treatment. It takes account of the fact that we are physical and emotional beings. We are, after all, the sum of many parts. It is a deeply relaxing complementary therapy.

What are the benefits?

  • It induces relaxation and helps to reduce the effects of stress.
  • It improves sluggish circulation and encourages the body to eliminate toxins
  • It encourages the body to produce its own endorphins (painkillers)
  • It improves sleep patterns
  • It strengthens the immune system
  • It revitalises the mind and body
  • It promotes balance within the body systems to maintain good health
  • It prevents deterioration or re-occurrence of ailments

The Treatment

Each session normally lasts an hour. At the start of a Reflexology treatment a client history will be taken to establish the focus of the session(s).

Areas on the feet may feel tender as they are worked on if there is congestion or blocked energy in the corresponding part of the body. The aim is to work to alleviate congestion and restore the body to a balanced state.

Generally you will leave a Reflexology session feeling very relaxed and with renewed energy. However, if the problem is long standing it will take a little more time to re-establish equilibrium.

Lack of good health doesn’t generally come out of the blue. Therefore, restoring and maintaining health takes time. Regular Reflexology encourages the restoration and maintenance of optimum health.
